We all know that discussions are critical for any corporate training. What happens when no one talks? Maybe the conversations are too brief. It can be a nightmare for a trainer. Sure you could call on people to talk but then it doesn’t feel natural.
I have found one easy fix over the years. Are you ready for it (Taylor Swift joke)?
How are the tables and chairs organized in the room? Most trainers place the tables and chairs in rows. This makes it difficult for learners to face one another for classroom discussions. Learners have to turn around in their chairs to face others. It can distract them from the instructor and can be uncomfortable.
Instead, I prefer training at one large table. All participants can see one another. Learners find it more comfortable. I believe it creates the perception of a business meeting and learners feel comfortable contributing. Obviously this wouldn’t work for a large class. It’s best suited for 20-25 attendees max.
I also avoid leading the class from the front of the room. Instead, I take a seat at the table with the attendees; preferably in the middle of the table. My learners find me more approachable as I’m just a person at the table. When you lead a training from the front of the room, you may be establishing an unattended hierarchy where you are the authority figure. Sitting at the table makes you part of the group. I still get up when the training requires it. However, I return to my seat as soon as possible.
Give it a try. I guarantee you will see s drastic improvement in participation. You will also foster a stronger relationship with your learners.
