You are responsible for your professional develop as a learning and development professional

I am passionate about training and development. I love my job because I help others excel and grow professionally. I can easily demonstrate value to an organization even though training is usually part of overhead. You may have met other folks in training and development. They are probably equally enthusiastic. Training folks usually have a large workload and sometimes our passion is our biggest weakness.

Training and development experts are always advocating learning solutions for their employees. Sometimes, we overlook the importance of our own ongoing growth. The learning and development industry has changed vastly over the last ten years and it is not slowing down. Technology is driving innovative new solutions that should not be overlooked. An investment in ourselves in an investment in our employees. Do not overlook the impact you could have on your customers.

I am an advocate for attending professional conferences. It helps you learn about upcoming trends and network with other professionals. This is powerful when you need assistance in brainstorming. These conferences can be a little pricey. Do not overlook some of the local organization in your area.

Also consider publications about training and development. Training Magazine provides free copies of their publications if you live in the US. I think they produce fascinating articles. I even like all the ads because I get exposure to new vendors.

The internet is no stranger to online webinars. You can find plenty of webinars on learning and development online. Many of them are free. Just be cautious of them. Some of them may be sales focus, which can be a little annoying. Training Magazine and eLearning Brothers are a great resource for webinars.

Online blogs (like this one) are very resourceful as well. I assume you figured that out since you found my blog.

Here is my key message: how can I, as a training and development specialist, continue to develop my employees if I do not invest in my own development? Talk to your organization about attending seminars and conferences. It may come at a cost but you can easily build a business case. If you never ask, you may never get the opportunity. You can also consider incorporating expenses into your annual budget.

You have to drive your growth. Your success is essiential for your organization.
