Companies typically want to create and conduct training internally. There is value to doing internal training. The content can be customized for your workforce and you can save money by delivering it with internal training.
In my opinion, companies sometime overlook the power of outside training. Don't get me wrong. There are certainly some bad external trainings. I, therefore, caution you before using an outside provider. Always review the class before sending your employees. Sending your team to a bad training can negatively affect your crediability.
So what's the value in outside training?
- Avoid Groupthink - Groupthink is when a group of individuals have the same ideas. There are not many innovative or challenging idea. Sending your employees to outside training exposes them to other organizations. They learn there are other ways to tackle different issues. It may give them new ideas or encourage them to keep an open mind.
- Networking - people get an opportunity to meet others in the industry when taking these classes. It allows them to get new perspectives and establish valuable contacts.
- Reduce distractions- employees sent to an offsite training are more likely to focus on the class. They don't have people coming to see them nor are they near their desk. As a result, they are able to focus their full attention on the content. People are less likely to work on their computers or check their phones when attending a public seminar.
You can see a sigifinicant value in outside training. That's not to say internal training isn't worthwhile. A balance of both is absolutely necessary.
