Are your employees dreading their next training session? Do these classes feel like a college lecture? Are people groaning when you ask them to do an activity? It can be somewhat discouraging.
How can you reenergize your training? Easy! Incorporate discussions into your class. Many people laugh at this suggestion but it provides an impactful experience for your learners. They come to your training with experience to share. Use that to your advantage.
Simply survey the room about what they have seen in the past or how they approached a situation previously. I promise you that the room will explode with discussion. It may be quiet at first but if you can get one person talking, the rest will follow.
Let us look a an example. Imagine we are leading a session on tackling conflict at work. We could ask the room about a time where they got into a dispute with a colleague and it ended badly. Someone will likely share an experience that everyone in the room finds relatable. Shutting covering the course material, ask these individuals could have approached the situation using the techniques. It will not only encourage discussion but encourage application of the material as well.
It's extremely powerful. Encouraging your learners to relate to one another leaves a significant impact.
You may be reading this right now and rolling your eyes. Don't knock it until you try it. I promise you'll walk away amazed at how quickly everyone pitches in. I do suggest that you monitor your time. It's easy for people to continue talking and/or dispute.
Happy discussions to you all!
