Alignment When Combining eLearning and Gamification

By now, you may have read my former article on managing expectations when incorporating Gamification into eLearning. Let's look at a different perspective: aligning eLearning with Gamification.

Gamification is a powerful tool in eLearning. Using it as a design factor can help to engage learners in a topic that is normally boring. Yet, Gamification has to work with your content. The biggest mistake one could make is to incorporate gaming aspects that do not align to the objectives. I typically tell people,"incorporating components of Super Mario Brothers adds little value to safety training. We need to align the content to the game."

How is this done? Easy! Put your learners into realistic scenario. Remember, adults want to know how they can apply information to their job. Create a simulation or ask learners to help solve a problem. With this approach, you can easily integrate Gamification features. How you do it is up to you. You just want to align the design to make sense with the content.

I could spend hours discussing the topic. Let me save you some time. When affirming in gaming features, ask yourself,"does these pair well? Does it make sense?" If not, you may want to reconsider the Gamification. There is no value in the design if it makes absolutely no sense.
